Urban Condo
Lighting & Interior Design Argenta / North Little Rock, AR

In downtown Argenta, North Little Rock a new three story building was constructed to house Cregan's Irish pub on the first floor, corporate offices on the second floor and condo's on the third floor.

John Rogers Design provided interior and lighting design services for a client who was open to new ideas. The owner moved from a spacious home in suburban west Little Rock. He wanted to scale down while having plenty of space to entertain and display his

impressive art collection. He has working knowledge of architecture and had definite ideas on design. He also made time to get involved in the planning and design phases of the project. It was a wonderful collaboration made in design heaven.

This space was a blank slate, only the perimeter demising walls that separated tenet space were in place. The owner wanted all his furnishings and accessories incorporated into the space plan. Our services were to space plan, design all
millwork, select all interior finishes, lighting design and develop the interior architectural documents with an architect.

The following CUE magazine 2009 article interview best describes our project.

Batman Themed Theatre Lighting & Interior Design

Little Rock, AR

Transitional Architectural Theatre Lighting & Interior Design

This Batman themed theater was not part of the original theater plans. I was hired by the owners to do lighting design for their new construction home. In my first preliminary lighting plan presentation the husband expressed his passion for a Batman themed theater and showed me an image of a Batman themed theater he liked. Which he followed up to say it was out of his budget.

I was hired for lighting design. What the owners did not know was that I have an interior design degree. I asked what amount he was willing to spend for a Batman themed theatre. I knew I could design the theatre for a quarter of the cost of the theatre he had shown me. I felt comfortable saying I could design

lighting and interiors for the theatre within their budget.
I
proceeded with bringing in my team of artists to review the images of his Batman comic magazine collection that had to be in the theater: Batcave, Wayne Manor, Lincoln Penney, Bat phone and the Joker.

As the images indicate, we succeeded in designing and installing the Batman themed theatre to meet the client's criteria.

At the owner’s request: Linear LEDs lit the Batcave faux wall murals of stone and Wayne Manor aged wood columns, custom crystal wall sconces, and a library with a life size Batman costume hidden behind a false bookcase. A false wooden window with a Gotham City Mural of the Bat signal were revealed by using ultraviolet black lights.

It was a fun project but could not have been accomplished without a team of excellent artists, building contractors, A.V. control company, millwork fabricators and electricians.

Traditional Remodel Interior Lighting Design
Fort Smith, AR
Historic District

This was a unique lighting design project! In our introduction meeting I presented my lighting design projects to the owners as usual. After the presentation the owner commented, “all your interior project images show art, I do not own any art!”

I asked to review their architectural plans. After I reviewed the plans for this 19th century warehouse building interior, I assured the owner that the interior architectural details and furnishings would become the art through proper lighting.

They signed my Lighting Design Agreement, then I had to create what I proposed.

The challenge presented to me was to define specialty architectural features with light. The obvious choices to me were to accent with light were the coffered ceilings, fireplace mantel, kitchen island, cabinetry, and certain walls. This would be the art in their new home.

The wood coffered beams have layered traditional molding. I worked with the builder to specify a linear LED to be inset into one layer of molding to define the coffered form and reflect light off the ceiling to light the room. This reduced the quantity of recessed ceiling fixtures and ceiling clutter. The recessed fixtures that were placed in each coffer are
symmetrical to the coffer and are adjustable. The 360-degree rotation and 45-degree vertical tilt of the LED fixtures allowed me to accent the fireplace, kitchen island and furnishings without light glare. The walls were accented by adjustable recessed light fixtures so the reflected light, lights the rooms. It is nice to have a design challenge when your design solution is successful in fulfilling the owners architectural lighting design request.

Mid-Town Transitional Home Landscape Lighting Tulsa, OK

Mid-Town Transitional Home Landscape Lighting

The client wanted the front façade and retaining walls lit for security and esthetics. We were approaching winter, and the landscape had just been replaced.

I had to plan the landscape lighting for the future growth of the plants and trees. It is wise to ask the landscape architect for the plant species so you can project the plant growth.

In planning the hardscape lighting you do not want to interfere with the security cameras. All security cameras are noted before drawing the landscape and hardscape lighting plan.

The advantage to designing exterior lighting for an existing residence is being

able to take panoramic photos. The images become your elevations in scale for your exterior lighting plans. Using CAD, I determine my light beam diameter sizes and placements in elevation view to verify that light placements do not interfere with security cameras and that they accent the architectural features. Each light source is keyed in plan and elevation view in the drawings to present to the client. After client approval, I finalized my keyed lighting legend of exterior light fixtures with various beam types to the plan for the exterior lighting installers. All lighting loads and transformer placements were also placed on the plan and materials were listed with the various switch loads for the electrician to determine the electrical loads and wire lengths.
A well-documented landscape lighting plan can save a client money because they can price compare with other install companies.I received an email from the interior design company Campbell Design Associates who brought me the project saying that they and the owner were very pleased with the front façade exterior lighting.

Contemporary Residence Interior Lighting Design
Tulsa, OK

It is always a pleasure to work with a classic architectural firm like Jack Arnold Homes Tulsa, OK. Jack is an exceptional architect and this was my first opportunity to light one of his projects.

I was contracted by DES of Rogers, AR to create a lighting design plan for this contemporary residence in Tulsa, OK. The client requested I only create lighting design plans for the public areas of the house. That is typical  when a client wants to reduce the lighting design fee expense.

The interior architecture has very clean lines and I did not want to clutter the ceiling with recessed cans. I wanted to use the ceilings as a light reflector. The kitchen upper cabinets did not go to the ceiling so I used the upper cabinets to house linear LEDs to reflect light off the ceiling. To balance that light I suggested the owner add a shelf extension to the breakfast room ceiling for installation of another linear LED. This balanced the LED up-lights in the kitchen and lit the room. This allowed me to add accent lighting to feature the architecture.

I did the same up-lighting technique in the living room with sleek contemporary wall sconces to light  the ceiling wooden beams. The  reflected ceiling light accents the wood beams and minimizes the need for recessed cans to light the room. The recessed lighting is used to accent art, furnishings and architectural features.

Traditional Residence Art Lighting

Little Rock, AR

This home is located in an area of Little Rock we call the upper heights by the Little Rock Country Club.
What was difficult about this project, was it had been under construction for one year. The house roof was installed and the rough-in framing almost complete.

On a nice spring day, I just happened to see the builder Jack Hartsell in the front yard. We have worked together on several projects and I inquired as to the status of the interior lighting design. Jack informed me the lighting plans had not been finalized. Jack gave me the architectural firm's name, Lindsey Yeary Architects in Little Rock. I have worked with the firm before but not with this architect, Carolyn Lindsey.

We met and she introduced me to the owner who has a vast art collection that they rotate. In review of my lighting design portfolio with my focus on art lighting I was hired.

Now the lighting design became the project priority. The builder was a month away from needing recessed can lighting housings and I had to produce the lighting plans, with lighting specifications, in two weeks.

I met their schedule, lighting was ordered.

To accent art, furnishings and architectural features, the recessed lighting distance placement from the wall is critical. All good lighting designers show in their lighting plans the recessed cans measurements from the walls. This helps the electricians know exactly where to place the art accent lighting.

Once the house is completed, the recessed cans cannot be relocated without creating a mess and extra cost.

I worked with the architect to re-layout the dining room coffered ceiling placement in order to place the lighting according to my lighting plan. All the recessed cans featured ceiling trims with a four inch diameter opening, rotated 360 degrees and a forty-five degree vertical adjustability. Recessed can fixtures must have the ability to adjust. it is the key to accent lighting.

This was the typical lighting approach for all the rooms in the house with art.

The client purchased two lots to build this contemporary home in west Little Rock designed by architect Gene Levy with CromwelI Architects.

John Rogers Design was hired to create interior and exterior lighting design plans. The owners had an extensive art collection and a beautiful interiors designed by Kaki Hockersmith Interiors Little Rock, AR.

The house was expansive and a two year project. In all my lighting projects, I design the architectural lighting. The decorative lighting is selected by the interior designer or architect. My lighting design intent is minimal light glare. I typically specify small diameter recessed cans that can be adjusted to aim on the architectural features, art and furnishings.

Modern Dining & Living Room Accent Lighting

This new construction modern style residence is located in a Mid-Town Tulsa neighborhood. The dining/living room has 18-foot ceilings with beautiful, aged wooden beams, and a textural stone fireplace as a wall divider between the two rooms. The owners have a wonderful art collection with clean simple modern furniture accents in both rooms.
My lighting approach was to reflected light off the art, stone texture fireplace and aged wooden beams to fill the rooms with light. With the high ceiling, it is best to specify a 15-watt LED adjustable recess fixture. As shown in the images, this
type of fixture allows me to aim a specific beam diameter to accent various sizes of art and architectural details.aim a specific beam diameter to accent various sizes of art and architectural details.

The color of light is important!

For this project the art consultant requested a warm color temperature. I suggested a 3000-kelvin temperature with a high-color rendering index number that intensifies the color of the art. This color of light resembles a typical non-LED light used in table lamps. After aiming all the lighting, the owner said this lighting project was his best
experience he'd had working with a lighting designer. The outcome of the lighting complimented his esthetics as he hoped it would!
